I think it is interesting to see someone commenting on these differences, as I have often observed them in my own life (texting is useful, but seriously guys…also, do we need to put every picture we take on facebook? how will any of these children ever run for elected office?).

I also love how every time one of these studies is done, there is some alarmist quote from some researcher about how worrisome this next generation’s attitude is:

“‘I worry that young people won’t be able to summon the capacity to focus and concentrate when they need to,’ said Vicky Rideout, a vice president at the Kaiser Family Foundation, which will release a sweeping survey on the technology and media habits of children and teenagers this month.”

As well as, “Dr. Rosen said that the newest generations, unlike their older peers, will expect an instant response from everyone they communicate with, and won’t have the patience for anything less.”

They still have to eat. I think they will figure it out.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the Large Hadron Collider’s woes, well… let the NYTimes sum up:

“A pair of otherwise distinguished physicists have suggested that the hypothesized Higgs boson, which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.”

One of the physicists goes on to say, ““Well, one could even almost say that we have a model for God.” It is their guess, he went on, “that He rather hates Higgs particles, and attempts to avoid them.”

Anyone else find antibiotic resistant bugs terrifying? I knew less prescribed antibiotics was the answer, but I didn’t know how quickly it could help, as some are currently demonstrating (via Slashdot).

Don’t get me wrong, it is a really, really well made game. Possibly one of the most visually polished games in recent memory. And the zero-g and vacuum sections of the game are incredibly original and entertaining. But as I wander through this giant spaceship filled with zombie-things all by my lonesome (I know, I know, like you’ve never done that before… but this time it is definitely different), my line of thought usually goes something like, “Games are supposed to be fun. I’m having fun. This is so much fun. Definitely having fun, right? On second thought, this isn’t fun at all. It’s more terrifying and miserable actually than fun. Might be the opposite of fun. Why do people make games like this? oh crap, SHOOT OFF THE BABY ZOMBIE’S ARMS AND LEGS BEFORE IT STICKS ITS TENDRILS THROUGH YOUR TORSO PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THE ZOMBIES STOP COMING”. And that process repeats.

And its not just me – Gamespy had this to say, “Drawing heavily on a multitude of science-fiction and horror themes, Dead Space might initially seem a bit formulaic, but rest assured that by the end of this roughly 15-hour saga of terror, you’ll be left a blubbering mess huddling with your controller slack in your shaking hands. But surely that must be hyperbole… It is not hyperbole.”

But for all the game’s not-fun-ness that makes me want to curl up into the fetal position, it does do some things very well. I’ve already mentioned the visual polish (fantastic), and the zero-g and vacuum portions of the game (very well done). The story, while not terribly original, is very well told. The weapons have a very visceral sensation of real weight and impact, and they sound great. I really dig the equipment upgrade process. Also, the game takes place on a spaceship and really feels like it. Why don’t more games do this well? It is an incredibly cool setting.

When it comes down to it though, I guess when I choose how to spend my evening, dismembering babies-turned-into-zombies is kind of low on my list. Crazy, I know.

What is in these things? I don’t know of any other food that, every time, starts out gross and gets more delicious with each bite. I don’t trust you, peach-o’s. But I am going to eat lots and lots of you.
